Lucas joined us in early 2019, at our old YoungMinds offices with a crew of other new, excited but nervous young people; there's always something special about those Activist inductions, watching them support one another and becoming a tight group before the weekends up. Over his years with us Lucas partook in many (pre-pandemic) in-person Activist days in the offices (where we all did a lot of gossiping and pizza eating), attended events and wrote blogs, but he really shone brightly when he joined (Lucy Goodwill and Elise's) iteration of Activating Change, a standout moment being his appearance on the Health and Social Care committee panel and various other radio and news media interviews.
Lucas loved YoungMinds and we loved him, he was deeply passionate about young people’s mental health and worked in the health care sector as he got older. He also loved playing rugby with his inclusive rugby team. And he loved his beautiful child Dylan and all the adventures and challenges that parenthood brings.
There's no denying that Lucas struggled intensely with his mental health and had some incredibly difficult times in his life. But he also cared deeply about making changes to the systems that although were hugely supportive to him, sometimes struggled to meet his diverse needs.
Lucas wrote us a blog for suicide awareness day in 2020 where he finished it with this line:
I’ll end with one of my favourite quotes: “Life is unpredictable. Not everything is in our control. But as long as you’re with the right people, you can handle anything.”
Being Lucas's lead worker was a privilege, and I feel profoundly sad that we’ve lost another wonderful, bright, caring, fun young person. But I hope that wherever his soul is, it moves onto its next journey with gentle ease.
Rest well Lucas xxx
Lucas' unique sense of humour and vibrant spirit will be deeply missed. Though it's a significant loss, his legacy will undoubtedly inspire our continued passion and drive for change.
