Deputy Lord Mayor of Bradford Alun tells us all about running in this year’s London Marathon.
This year I am the Deputy Lord Mayor of Bradford, but in my working life I am a GP, so I was really pleased when Geoff Reid, the Lord Mayor, chose YoungMinds as the charity for his appeal this year.
In 31 years of practice I have seen innumerable times the effects on young people and their families of mental health problems, and the difficulties they have in getting support…So I thought this was a perfect opportunity to make a unique contribution both in fundraising terms, and perhaps as importantly in publicity and awareness.
I am afraid my marathon preparation is legendary in the local running community for its inadequacy. I achieved a PB on my last marathon on an average 8 miles a week running for the 2 months previous. I take the view that I have proved I can run that far, so I don’t need to keep doing long runs to prove it again!
That and my secret weapon, a jam sandwich consumed on the start line whilst waiting for the gun. Having said that I have tried to do a bit better this time, covering nearly 70 miles in Feb and on target for about 80 in March.
