What you'll learn

This course aims to give you an insight into life online for teenagers, including risks and benefits for mental health.

By the end of the course, you’ll:

  • Understand what life's like for the first generation of teenagers using technology as a primary means of socialising and communicating 
  • Recognise and understand different technologies and how young people use them, including a wide range of social media platforms and apps
  • Understand the positive impact technology can have, as well as the negative
  • Be able to identify risks and benefits to emotional wellbeing including online safety and online support.

Why take this course?

Young people face new pressures and challenges online. As the first generation to grow up with the internet, their experiences of school, friendship, conflict and communication are totally different to the generations before.

The vast majority of teens use social media. As a professional working with young people, you need a strong understanding of the benefits and potential pitfalls of social media for young people's mental health.

This course will provide you with the knowledge and skills to support young people’s mental health through understanding the role technology plays in their lives.
