People across the country are joining us by saying #HelloYellow for World Mental Health Day (October 10th), to raise awareness for mental health and wellbeing in young people.
From family problems to bullying and body image; children and young people in today’s society face a number of complex issues that can affect their mental health and wellbeing. As a result, almost 850,000 children aged 5-16 have a mental health problem, which is why we need to keep the conversation rolling.
The statistics alone show just how big the issue of young people’s mental health really is:
- Three children in every classroom have a diagnosable mental health disorder.
- Roughly 725,000 people in the UK suffer from Eating Disorders, 86% of these will have shown symptoms before the age of 19.
- One in 10 deliberately harm themselves regularly (and 15,000 of them are hospitalised each year as a result)
- Half of all lifetime cases of mental illness begin by age 14.
Supporting the Cause
Channel 4 newsreader and YoungMinds Ambassador, Cathy Newman has already posted her #HelloYellow selfie online. Cathy said:
Children are facing an array of mental health problems. We need to do something about this - but first we need to talk about it.
YoungMinds does a great job tackling the stigma of mental health. It (yellow) is not a colour I normally wear, but I'm delighted to break the habit of a lifetime and say #HelloYellow to show my support for the campaign.
