Pride: for EVERYONE LGBTQ+
A statement from YoungMinds on Pride month. This month and always we stand in solidarity with everyone under the LGBTQ+ umbrella.
This month and always we stand in solidarity with everyone under the LGBTQ+ umbrella. Pride is for all young people who identify as LGBTQ+. It is a month to celebrate everyone in the community and to honour the hard-won battles for equality.
Sadly, we cannot say that the fight is over. We know that young people that identify as LGBTQ+ continue to face discrimination and experience hate crimes. And until all young trans and non-binary people are accepted and celebrated for who they are, we must fight for justice. Until systemic racism is rooted out from all spaces, including LGBTQ+ community spaces, we must fight for justice.
The pressures LGBTQ+ young people face from transphobia and homophobia impact their mental health. Half a million people text shout 85258 for mental health support during the Covid-19 pandemic, and one in three of those texts were from LGBTQ+ texters. In April, research by Just Like Us reported that LGBTQ+ young people are twice as likely to experience depression, anxiety and panic attacks than other young people. The research also revealed that disabled and Black LGBT+ young people are more at risk of depression and anxiety disorders, and are also more likely to experience panic attacks.
LGBTQ+ youth must have access to mental health support that is safe and accessible for them. But it is so much more than this; all of us must be striving for a more equal, just society - one that accepts everyone for who they are. We will continue to fight for this and to celebrate everyone LGBTQ+ this month and always.
